Where in the World is Malta?

Malta, an island located in the Mediterranean Sea, is a state in the European Union.

Why does this matter and what does it have to do with fireworks, you ask?

Malta is a rich culture that thrives on festivals, feasts and celebrations.  What goes better with a celebration than fireworks??  Not only do fireworks just happen to be a great addition to liveliness of this island, but they play an important role in the history.  The making and use of pyrotechnics in Malta dates back to the Middle Ages.  They have been celebrating special events such, as the election of a new Pope or the birth of a prince with fireworks display for centuries.  This weekend marks the 10th Anniversary of Malta joining the European Union, which of course they will be celebrating in conjunction with the 13th annual edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival.

The Malta International Fireworks Festival starts today and features firework displays from local and international competitors. The displays are beautifully choreographed along the Grand Harbour.  It will end with Grand Finale displays on April 30th.   Check out these sites for more information about this spectacular festival.
